Australian fishing company Austral Fisheries has been charged over the electrocution of a 20-year-old man on the company’s shrimp trawler Newfish 1 in the Gulf of Carpentaria in 2013, reportsabc.net.au.

Ryan Donoghue died while cutting rusted shackles using a 240-volt angle grinder, which was plugged into a socket without a safety switch.

The company is facing a maximum penalty of AUD 1.5 million (€995,126/$1.1 million) if found guilty.

The victim’s father, Steven Donoghue, spent the past 3.5 years pushing for a prosecution and better regulation of Australia's maritime industry.
