The decision by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to issue a new fishing license for arctic surf clams as part of a plan to introduce indigenous participation into the fishery could have several positive implications for Clearwater Seafoods, in the view of BMO Capital Markets analysts.

The decision would potentially boost Clearwater were the company to suceed in partnering with an indigenous organization or company, apply for the license ownership, or establish commercial terms with the new licensee to harvest, process, and distribute the clams, BMO Capital markets analyst Jonathon Lamers wrote in a note to clients.
