Five of the largest krill fishing companies have pledged to stop fishing in the Antarctic Peninsula as well as set up marine sanctuaries in the region through the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs) in coming years.

WWF on Monday lauded the voluntary krill fishery closure by the five fishing companies who make up the Association of Responsible Krill (ARK) Harvesting companies.

Those companies include Norway-based Aker BioMarine, Pesca Chile, South Korea-based Insung, Norway-based Rimfrost and China National Fisheries Corporation.
