Massachusetts-based seafood supplier Slade Gorton on Tuesday announced it would acquire a Maine-based supplier of tuna, swordfish and other tropical Southeast Asian species.

Slade Gorton will acquire Portland-based North Atlantic Seafood in September, after which the group will operate as a subsidiary of the Boston supplier.

The company's CEO Kim Gorton told IntraFish the acquisition is the first for the company since 2010, when it acquired Sonoma Seafoods.

"It's the right opportunity for us," she said of the deal. "It's central to our strategy of connecting our customers to the food source as close as possible, and doing it in a way that supports everything we believe in."
