The CEO of Icelandic seafood giant Samherji described 2020 as a “roller coaster ride,” during which it managed to maintain sales at a similar level to 2019 but saw profit fall by 13 percent as the coronavirus took its toll on markets.

Samherji made a profit of ISK 7.8 billion (€52.4 million/$60.9 million) last year, compared with ISK 9 billion (€60.5 million/$70.3 million) a year earlier.

The pandemic had a “far-reaching effect” on operations, said the company.

CEO Thorsteinn Mar Baldvinsson said that during the year “everyone's solidarity and resourcefulness was significantly tested,” but the group managed to maintain fishing, processing and “other activities” so that overall operations remained “virtually unchanged.”
