Mericq Group, one of France's largest seafood processors, has acquired Irish lobster supplier Breizon, giving the group a stronger position in the European shellfish market.

The purchase of Galway-based Breizon is the first time southwest France-based Mericq has ventured outside its home country for an acquisition, the company said in a brief post on its Linkedin page.

Executives at Mericq, which reports annual sales of around €337 million ($355 million), were keen to cash in on the Irish firm's know-how and product quality, they said.
