Aqua-Spark, the Netherlands-based global investment fund focused on sustainable aquaculture, is opening a new office in Bangkok, Thailand.

The new location will allow the group to focus on deal sourcing for its main fund, as well as improve deal flow across Southeast Asia. The office will be headed by Tom Prins, Aqua-Spark's head of deal flow.

Aqua-Spark chose Bangkok because of its growing agri-food startup ecosystem scene, the group said. Thailand has a $43 billion ($47 billion) domestic agri-food and aquaculture industry, according to the US Department of Commerce.

The investment fund recently launched a new Sub-Saharan African aquaculture fund.

In January, it invested $7 million (€6.1 million) alongside the Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries (NORFUND) in African tilapia farmer Lake Harvest.

Aqua-Spark has invested in 24 companies since 2015 and has €275 million ($313.8 million) in assets under management.

Aqua-Spark portfolio companies include Norway's Molofeed, insect-based feed developer Protix, and natural gas-based alternative feed producer Calysta among several others.
