When authorities in Peru canceled this year's first anchovy fishing season in June, their decision effectively removed hundreds of thousands of metric tons of fishmeal and fish oil from the global market, sparking fears of soaring feed prices.
Skretting, the world's largest aquaculture feed manufacturer, said prices for feed were inevitably going to rise as a result, and since the announcement fishmeal prices have indeed increased, according to data from the World Bank.
However, vegetable commodities prices are coming down, and these ingredients account for the vast majority of a salmon farmer's feed mix.
