The second anchovy fishing season of the year in Peru will determine the extent to which prices in the global fishmeal and fish oil markets will recover from the volatility of recent years, officials from three European feed producers told IntraFish.

The signs, however, are positive after the conclusion this week of the first and larger fishing season in Peru’s north-central waters, during which almost all of the 2.475 million-metric-ton quota for the period starting April 16 was harvested.

“Although there’s still uncertainty, prices could soften when the new season starts in October-November, as good yields are expected and this normally results in prices going down,” said Erik Aanensen, purchasing director for Norwegian aquaculture feed giant Skretting.
