US-based Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and insect ingredient producer InnovaFeed are partnering on the construction and operation of an insect production site in Decatur, Illinois.

Innovafeed will own and operate the facility, co-locating with ADM's Decatur corn processing facility, which will supply feedstocks and waste heat.

Construction is expected to kick start in 2021, upon necessary permitting and approvals. The facility will have a target annual production capacity of 60,000 metric tons of animal feed protein from the fly Hermetia Illucens.

InnovaFeed already has two insect production facilities in France, however, the Decatur facility marks the company's first international appearance.

The new facility will generate more than 280 direct and 400 indirect jobs in the Decatur region by the second phase.

Last year, feed giant Cargill entered into an agreement with French company, Innovafeed, to develop salmon feed based on the production of black soldier flies.

Cargill expects to see much larger volumes available as soon as next year, while InnovaFeed is building a production site with a capacity of 10,000 metric tons of meal per year and is planning five more sites by 2022.
