Alaska lawmakers are looking into why the state's Department of Labor commissioner blocked hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines against Alaska-headquartered harvester, processor and supplier Copper River Seafoods.

The commissioner's own inspectors said the company willfully violated COVID-19 workplace safety standards, according to internal documents obtained by local news site KTOO.

Last summer, during the busy salmon processing season, Copper River Seafoods experienced a major outbreak, with around 77 percent of its Anchorage employees who worked in July and August testing positive for COVID, according to Alaska's Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
