When I announced to some of my millenial colleagues that my next column would be on the use of blockchain technology in the food traceability sector I was met with a pretty much resounding “Huh?”

The response didn’t fill me with confidence -- I was already doubting my abilities to comprehend how it actually works -- but with deadlines looming and unwilling to back down from my very intellectual-sounding subject-matter, I hesitantly crept my way into the world of digitized transactions, distributed ledgers and cryptographic hash functions.
