Mike Velings, of private equity firm Aqua-Spark, sees "a massive opportunity" for alternative ingredients in aquaculture, and indeed sees the huge projected growth for aquaculture as being dependent on as many as 30 different alternative ingredients to help it reach its target.

Aqua-Spark is already a leader in the alternative ingredients space, having invested in single-cell protein producer Calysta and insect farm Protix.

The company also invested in EnerGaia, a dietary supplement made from algae.

Other investments include LoveTheWild, CageEye, Matorka and Sogn Aqua.
