Innovate UK awarded nearly £900,000 ($117,358/€99,778) to a research collaboration investigating the effectiveness of insect-derived feeds for farmed salmon.

Involved in the collaboration are startup Entomics Biosystems, the University of Stirling and the University of Reading.

Entomics’s solution is to introduce functional insect-derived protein feeds to the UK aquaculture market using insect post-processing technology.

European insect producers welcomed new EU legislation authorizing the use of insect proteins in aquaculture feed this past July.

“Overall, this funding will expedite and de-risk Entomics’s technology development, bringing the company closer to commercial readiness whilst consolidating Entomics’s position as a biotechnology leader in the growing insect industry," said Entomics Co-founder Matt McLaren.
