The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is welcoming a $560,000 (€509,996) contribution from the US State Department to support its fish farm in Algeria’s Tindouf refugee camps.

It is the second US contribution to WFP’s activities in Algeria, providing refugees with work opportunities and enhancing food security in the camps.

The donation will allow WFP to increase access to fresh fish produced in the world’s first fish farm in a refugee camp, with an expected annual production of 21,000 kilograms, or 21 metric tons, of tilapia.

The farm was built in partnership with French NGO, Triangle Generation Humanitaire. WFP has been running tests since February, training a team of 15 refugees.
