With fishmeal costs soaring and plenty of alternatives in the wings, fish farmers are trying to reduce their consumption and use the ingredient strategically, according to a recent report from Rabobank.
Demand for fishmeal and oil is still strong, but supply is under pressure.
“The decline in supply has been driven by both lower wild catch of small pelagics and, more importantly, increasing direct human consumption of these species,” Rabobank says. “Arguably, these trends are likely to continue in the future, forcing rationalization of the use of fishmeal in feed formulas and changing its role from a source of protein to a functional or strategic ingredient.”
