The year of 2013 was a devastating one for Thailand’s shrimp sector.
The Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) disease raged throughout Asia, but the Southeast Asian nation was hit especially hard. Production of Thai shrimp peaked in 2010 at 610,000 metric tons, and then dropped to 450,000 metric tons in 2012, and 250,000 metric tons last year. Shrimp exports fell 34 percent to 187,000 metric tons or THB 60 billion last year. One would have thought it couldn’t get any worse – but then 2014 came.
