If everything goes to plan, Norcantabric will be Spain's first land-based salmon farm, but technology currently presents the biggest hurdle in getting there, CEO Emilio Cano told IntraFish.

"The biggest challenge is to keep producing efficiently," Cano said of the new venture on Spain's northern coast. "It all boils down to whether the technology will deliver on what it says it would at this point."

Norcantabric aims to produce 3,000 metric tons of salmon per year by 2021 and up to 10,000 metric tons per year following expansion plans.
