Offshore aquaculture production poses several challenges, but it is a must in seeking new opportunities for expansion, according to consultancy DNV GL's Ole Andreas Flagstad.

Speaking at the Norwegian Steel Producers' annual Offshore Aquaculture Day in Oslo last week, Flagstad addressed the challenges of offshore fish farming, dividing them into three categories: the fish, the employees and the equipment.

Fish can be adapted through breeding and vaccines, etc, said Flagstad.

He conceded that in terms of personnel, it can be risky to have people working in such a harsh environment.
