An article in The Guardian by Jennifer Jacquet, assistant professor at New York University, argues that bivalves should be the focus of aquaculture's future growth.

"In a recent article in the journal Solutions, my co-authors and I argue that bivalves are the most environmentally sound animal species group, and the least worrying when it comes to welfare," wrote Jacquet.

She also suggested aquaculture is growing "the wrong way" and is becoming an unsustainable and "unecessarily cruel" industrialized food system.

"Bivalves are the best option for farming if one chooses to farm and/or eat animals at all," wrote Jacquet.
