Nearly 900,000 fish could have escaped after a storm battered a site belonging to Chilean farmer Blumar in the Los Lagos region over the weekend, the company announced.

The storm, “which generated waves of significant magnitude," resulted in the cages being cut loose from their moorings and sinking in the early hours of Saturday.

Blumar said all security and contingency protocols were immediately activated and the relevant authorities, including the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) and the Chilean navy, were informed.
