AUSTRALIANS are predicting that sleepy cod will become an important farmed finfish in Queensland and the Northern Territory and believe it has potential for the Asian market, reports GEOFF WILSON.

The fish has already been partially tested in the Singapore market where a similar species is named sand goby, or marbled goby, sold live from tanks in restaurants.

Sleepy cod has many desirable characteristics for aquaculture - a willingness to eat pelleted foods in ponds along with good eating qualities.

Economic studies indicate that the fish could be viable, with an 18month growout time and A$10/kg farm gate price.
