Aion, the spinoff from Norwegian krill harvest company Aker BioMarine, has completed a pilot project for Nutreco-owned Skretting in which the feed giant's big fishmeal bags have been recycled and repurposed into plastic pallets.

For Aker BioMarine, these bags account for 500,000 metric tons of plastic waste every year.

Aion is now ready to replicate what is has done with Skretting for Aker BioMarine's Houston – Montevideo route, Aion CEO Runa Haug Khoury told IntraFish.

"By replacing wood pallets with Aion's circular plastic pallets for this route, Aker BioMarine will gain an estimated 84 percent reduction in carbon emissions, and a 50 percent reduction in costs over the 10-year lifespan of the pallets,” Haug Khoury said.
