The search for the missing crew members of the Spanish fishing vessel Villa de Pitanxo, which sank in waters off Newfoundland, Canada, last has been called off.

Nine bodies were recovered from the ocean, three survivors were rescued, while 12 of the crew remain missing.

"The decision is never taken lightly. It is extremely difficult to come to this conclusion, but unfortunately all the evidence now points that the survivability is not there," Commander Brian Owens of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax told CBC News.
