The prospect of a trade war with the European Union and tariffs on Scottish salmon has moved a step closer after the UK government announced it is bringing forward legislation aimed at changing the Brexit protocol for Northern Ireland.

Scottish salmon will likely be a major target for any potential EU retaliatory tariffs as officials in London and Brussels continue to dispute how the Northern Ireland protocol portion of the EU-UK trade and cooperation agreement (TCA) should work -- 17 months after the deal was reached.
