Salmon fed insect-based feed shows good growth rates, taste
Norwegian researchers see promise in insect meal-based feed.
Farmed salmon fed with insect-meal supplemented feed showed good growth rates, and tested well in taste tests, according to new research from Norway's Institute of Marine Research.
Farmed salmon fed with feed containing rates of 10, 33, 66 and 100 percent insect meal grew just as well as salmon fed with conventional feed with fishmeal raw materials, researchers found.
In all, 12 cages were tested, and the fish was raised from 1.2 kilos to a harvest weight of 4.5 kilos.
Blind taste tests conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fishery and Aquaculture (NOFIMA) found the fish fed with insect meal had no discernible taste difference from conventional farmed salmon.
