Russia's imports of key Chilean seafood species fall sharply
However, purchases of horse mackerel tripled.
Russia's imports of Atlantic salmon and mussels from Chile fell last year, while imports of coho salmon and horse mackerel from the South American country rose, according to the Russian Fish Union, which represents various fish processors and traders, citing data from the Chilean customs service.
Russia's total imports of fish and seafood from Chile in 2024 slid 25 percent in volume compared to 2023, reaching 50,000 metric tons. The value of these imports fell 35 percent to $260 million (€253 million), the lowest point in the past six years, according to the Fish Union.
Russian purchases of frozen headed and gutted (H&G) Atlantic salmon fell 45 percent both in volume and value to 21,000 metric tons worth $140 million (€136 million).
Imports of frozen Atlantic salmon fillets from Chile also decreased 10 percent in volume to 3,000 metric tons worth $32 million (€31 million).
Imports of Chilean mussels decreased 25 percent to 15,000 metric tons worth $32 million (€31 million).
However, Russia's imports of frozen coho salmon jumped 30 percent in volume to 6,000 metric tons and increased by 20 percent in value to $34 million (€33 million), compared to 2023 levels.
Deliveries of frozen whole horse mackerel from Chile to Russia tripled both in volume and value to almost 2,000 metric tons worth more than $2 million (€1.9 million), the Fish Union reported.
