Mortality in Norwegian salmon farming represents a major problem in terms of animal welfare, as well as a huge financial loss for the industry.

According to figures from the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries, this loss amounted to 53 million salmon last year, a figure seen as "unacceptable" by Norwegian Fisheries Minister Per Sandberg, who told the Fisheries Gazette this was now the main focus of the work being carried out by his department.

And the situation is getting worse. Mortality in large fish 15 months after being put in the sea almost doubled between 2010 and 2016, according to figures from the Institute of Marine Research.
