The Scottish salmon farming industry generated more than £1 billion (€1.2 billion/$1.3 billion) turnover last year, according to latest research done by independent economic firm 4-consulting.

However, the total impact is double that of revenue, through wages and taxes and spending on other sectors in Scotland, the report said.

The study showed that for every £100 (€115.9/$129.4) of turnover within the Scottish aquaculture industry, another £93 (€107.8/$120.4) is sustained in another sector of Scotland's economy through supply chains as well as high street spending by the wages paid to the industry's employees.
