The salmon farming industry in Chile’s Magallanes region, the country’s southernmost farming area, is facing a new threat from lawmakers who are proposing a ruling that could result in the elimination of 50 percent of the region's salmon farming licenses.

The proposed law, pushed by senators Guido Girardi, Ximena Ordenes, Isabel Allende and Carolina Goic, seeks to eliminate the renewability of aquaculture concessions in the region.

At the moment, there are two types of farming concessions in Chile, permanent ones and renewable licenses, which expire every 25 years but can be renewed.
