Mowi Canada West has made significant progress towards its goal of achieving the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification at its salmon farms in British Columbia, the company announced Wednesday.

Now 82 percent of Mowi's BC area farms meet ASC salmon standard, with all of its farms in the the Broughton Archipelago achieving the independent third-party certification.

The company is working toward certifying remaining farms in Klemtu, Port Hardy and Quatsino by next year, Mowi Communications Manager Chris Read told IntraFish.

Mowi Canada West has certified more farms to the ASC standard than any company in North America, according to the company.

The Norwegian salmon giant announced its intention in 2012 to obtain ASC certifications for all of its sites by 2020.
