Offshore aquaculture project hoping to make history gains critical EPA permit

If longtime offshore proponent Neil Sims gains approval for a demonstration fish farm in federal waters in the US Gulf of Mexico, he will make history.

Kampachi Farms operated its Velella Gamma project for almost a year, located 6 miles off the coast of Kona, Hawaii, in 2014. The Velella Epsilon, proposed for 40 miles offshore of Sarasota, Florida, would culture the same species, which is native to the Gulf of Mexico.
