Chilean salmon processor Nova Austral is implementing new techniques to raise salmon without the use of antibiotics, after the industry was heavily punished by international markets for the high level of antibiotics used in farmed salmon in Chile.

Earlier this year, Costco shifted from buying 75 percent of its salmon from Chile, and 25 from other markets – mainly from Norway -- to buying only 25 percent of salmon from Chile, due to the rampant use of antibiotic.

After Ewos Invest AS -- an affiliated company of Norwegian feed producer Ewos -- acquired Nova Austral, previously owned by Pescanova, the Chilean company decided to implement a project aimed at totally eliminating antibiotics throughout its operations.
