Norwegian group, Nordic Aquafarms (NAF) plans to construct a 33,000-metric ton land-based salmon farm in Belfast, Maine, which would make it one of the largest land-based salmon farms in the world.

The company has signed agreements for 40 acres of property on the outskirts of Belfast, where there is abundant access to sea and freshwater resources.

"Finding an ideal site in Maine has been a six-month project," said Erik Heim, CEO of Nordic Aquafarms.

The company plans to construct the farm in several phases, but it will ultimately produce 33,000 metric tons annually -- equating to approximately 8 percent of US consumption of salmon.
