Despite increased salmon mortality from the algal bloom in Norway last month, the Norwegian Seafood Federation said the country's overall biomass is near the same levels as the year prior.

The reason comes from increased harvests counterbalancing the number of dead salmon recorded, Managing Director Edmund Broback said.

Total production increased 1 percent compared to last year, but data is not very accurate because some sites affected by the algal bloom haven't been reported on yet.

The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries announced a 3 percent increase in salmon biomass in May compared to last year.
