Oslo-listed SalMar, which applied for 16 development permits through its subsidiary Mariculture, was informed by Norway's Directorate of Fisheries it can obtain up to eight of those permits for its offshore concept "Smart Fish Farm."

The company said it will not dispute the decision to only approve some permits, but will proceed with its concept based on the eight permits which were approved.

The farm will be the world's first plant designed for offshore farming in the open sea. The specially designed "Smart Fish Farm" could be established in heavily exposed areas 20-30 nautical miles off the Norwegian coastlines.
