Neighbors of the planned land-based salmon farm in Belfast, Maine, have filed a lawsuit against the city claiming city officials skirted local rules to allow the project to go ahead, according to local media reports.

Residents said the city council failed to follow proper procedures before granting permission for Norway's Nordic Aquafarms to develop the land-based salmon project.

They also claim the council took actions with the intention of avoiding citizen participation in the planning process.

Nordic Aquafarm's site is slated to be one of the largest salmon farms of its type in the world.
