Nordic Aqufarms continues to face headwinds from residents in the rural Maine city of Belfast as it looks to build one of the world's largest land-based salmon farms there by 2020.

Erik Heim, the US CEO of Norway-based Nordic Aquafarms, the company behind the project, told IntraFish the company will continue to have an open-door policy for residents who visit its new office in downtown Belfast.

"It's important to work through these issues," said Heim, referring to recent events such as a heated public information meeting the company held in December where residents largely disputed the legality of Nordic's pending permit applications and potential pollution.
