Sanford, New Zealand's largest seafood company, is applying to build five small open ocean salmon farms in what it dubs 'Project South,' according to a document found on the company's website.

The project can potentially yield 25,000 metric tons of King salmon in Southland; up from current levels of only 3,800 metric tons, Ted Culley, aquaculture manager at Sanford, told What's On Invers.

The company aims to strengthen its Southland base with this project, which could potentially increase job opportunities in the area.
