A preliminary license for a new type of shrimp production site combining the activities of large and small producers has been granted in Rio Grande de Norte in northeast Brazil.

Should the model, which is aimed at attracting international and domestic investors, prove successful it could potentially reshape shrimp farming in Brazil.

The so-called Marine Shrimp Farm Condominium model is the brainchild of Itamar Rocha, president of MCR Aquacultura and Brazilian shrimp producers' trade body ABCC.

Rocha says it is important to get a single functioning unit approved that is profitable and solid enough to attract local, national or even international investors.
