Chile's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) estimates 103,720 salmon that escaped from a site belonging to Chilean farmer Blumar in the Los Lagos region in June.

The figure represents 12 percent of the 875,125 total salmon housed at the site.

It was previously estimated that 771,405 fish died when 16 cages sank after stormy weather battered the site in late June.

The storm resulted in the cages being cut loose from their moorings and sinking.

Following the incident, Blumar said it would deploy more than 400 artisanal fishermen to try to recapture escaped salmon.
