Around 250,000 Atlantic salmon were lost to a mass mortality event last week at a farm operated by Multi X in the South American nation's southern Los Lagos region Sernapesca, Chile's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service, said in an update.

Around 1,075 metric tons of salmon were removed from the site and stored before being transferred to disposal plants in Puerto Montt, the authority said.

Sernapesca initially estimated losses at 300,000 fish.

The company, formerly known as Multiexport, reported the incident at the San Luis production site in the Reloncavi estuary to Sernapesca on May 18.
