While Mowi's "Egg"salmon farm concept received six development licences, the rejection of steel as a construction material has the aquaculture giant questioning the concept's future.

Although using composite is a feasible alternative, it will significantly increase the cost of the project and will limit production of the farms by shipbuilding companies, which Mowi had counted on to build many eggs per year.

"The goal is to build a finished egg for NOK 75 million ($8.3 million/€7.5 million), but we need more analysis to see if it is possible," said Hauge Aqua's Cato Lyngoy at a presentation at this week's AquaNor trade event.
