Norwegian salmon giant Mowi suspended construction of a fish farm near Campbell River, Canada, amid protests against open-net farming, reports Campbell River Mirror.

The company put the project on hold until agreements are reached with Homalco First Nation representatives over their concern to protect clam gardens that are 3,500 years old.

Mowi has held a license and tenure for Cyrus Rocks since 1986, but the site has been dormant since 2013.

Protesters gathered around the site Tuesday to express their concerns over the impact that open-net farming has on wild salmon populations, citing the spread of sea lice as one concern.
