Norwegian aquaculture solutions provider Plany, together with its partner industrial gas company AGA, is preparing to launch a patented solution for sea lice reduction, which it has been testing for three years at Mowi’s salmon farms.

The system, Oxyshield, combines sea lice skirts, a traditional method to reduce contact between the fish and the outer environment, and an oxygenation system that produces micro-bubbles to keep oxygen levels up while the skirts are on.

The main drawback in the use of sea lice skirts – which reduce sea lice infestation between 25 percent and 85 percent, depending on the moment at which they are first deployed – is a significant reduction in oxygen in the fish pen.
