A new analysis released by city officials from New Bedford this week shows it "presents the greatest opportunity for growth in the immediate future" for aquaculture growth on Massachusetts' south coast.

Rhode Island Public Radio reports that Edward Anthes–Washburn, executive director for the Port of New Bedford, said aquaculture would add to the port’s lucrative fishing industry, which makes up 90 percent of the port's $9.8 billion (€8.3 billion) economic value. Today, the port's fisheries are mostly wild-caught.

The New Bedford Port Authority plans to request proposals this summer from commercial shellfish growers.
