A MYSTERIOUS disease which rots lobster shells to the point where it can kill the crustaceans is affecting 30% of the wild population along the USA's New England coast, reports VELO MITROVICH.

Black Spot disease - also known as 'ugly lobster syndrome' - is a shell disease that turns lobsters black and mottled. It does not harm the lobster's meat, but it makes the shells too unsightly to serve whole.

The disease was first noticed in lobsters caught off New York's Long Island in the 1980s, and there has been speculation since that it was initially caused by chemical by-products - primarily alkylphenois - dumped into Long Island Sound.
