With today's recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology and water recycling, the need for fresh water in smolt production is only a fraction of what it was a few years ago, Arvid Pedersen, head of Grieg Seafood Finnmark's smolt business, told IntraFish.

In the "old days" of flow-through plants, one depended on the ample supply of fresh water. That is still the case for the smolt plant in Adamselv in Lebesby municipality of Norway, that was built in the mid-1980s, and started operating in 1987.
