One of the worst storms to hit Central America in years struck Nicaragua as a category 4 hurricane on Tuesday, with winds reaching 150 miles per hour. While it weakened slightly as it moved inland to neighboring Honduras, it brought heavy rains and high winds that damaged homes, roads and airports and wreaked multi-million dollar impacts for the country's burgeoning shrimp and tilapia farming sectors.

While executives confirmed to Intrafish that farms escaped direct damage from the storm, the heavy rainfall and logistics damage will have both immediate and delayed effects for the industry.
