A wildlife officer with Tasmanian salmon farmer Huon Aquaculture was attacked by a 200 kilogram seal while performing his regular seal management duties, reports the Mercury.
The 50-year-old officer suffered a leg injury as he tried to remove the seal from one of the company's salmon pens on Sept. 13.
"It does happen and that's why we have dedicated wildlife officers to make sure we are doing what we can to protect the animals but also to keep our staff safe," said Huon Aquaculture Corporate Affairs Manager Pene Snashall.
Huon Aquaculture abides by a stringent government framework around seal management.
Huon Aquaculture's Fortress Pens stop seals from entering the pens for their own safety.
Seals are also unable to access the walkways, to prevent any possibility of aggressive seals interacting with employees, according to the Huon Aquaculture website.
The company hasn't relocated any seals since 2016.
